Dr. Antoine Roederer will be presenting this year's pre-dinner talk before the Banquet on Monday 8th November. Here is a taster of what to expect:
WAVES IN SPACE:
Some Highlights and Perspectives in Space Antenna Engineering
Dr Antoine Roederer
Technical University of Delft
From Spoutnik I in 1957, with its 4 VHF whip antennas radiating 1 watt, to INMARSAT IV 50 years later with a 9m antenna transmitting kilowatts in 250 digitally formed beams to serve thousands of simultaneous users, the evolution of space antennas has been a most exciting adventure.
Innovations in antenna engineering, such as offset and shaped reflectors, multibeam arrays, overlapping feed clusters, frequency selective surfaces, interferometric radiometers, semi-active antennas….. have been the key to successful space missions.
This dinner lecture will look at some highlights in the space antenna concepts, architectures and technologies of the past decades and at some exciting trends for the space missions of tomorrow.
Antoine Roederer has been involved in antenna R&D in the last 45 years including 35 at the European Space Agency Space Technology Centre Estec in the Netherlands.
He has researched extensively in the areas of log-periodics, reflect-arrays as well as multi-beam antennas arrays and reflector antennas. He has over 20 patents and 150 publications in these fields.
Life Fellow of the IEEE, Dr Roederer is Doctor Honoris Causa and Scientific Advisor at the Technical University of Delft in the Netherlands.

The James Roderick James Lifetime
Achievement Award
has been presented to Prof. Peter S. Hall
In recognition of his outstanding contribution over a signigficant period of time in the fields of Antennas and Propagation. Professor Peter Hall has made outstanding technical achievements and contributed significantly to our knowledge and understanding of microstrip antennas and arrays, active antennas, MIMO and body-worn communication systems.
Professor Peter Hall is the first person to be presented with this award which has been inaugurated by the out-going conference chairs in memory of its namesake whose example of longterm outstanding contribution was so exemplary.
Professor Peter Hall was presented with a certificate and commemorative cut glass bowl at the conference and the Committee would like to add their further congratulations here.
A massive thank you to all who attended and contributed to the success of the conference. Attendance was higher than ever before and yet the academic standards and the friendly atmosphere remained the same as ever.
